In this workshop we will use techniques from musical improv and apply them toward writing scripted songs. The workshop will include a combination of musical improv games and writing exercises. We’ll also review song structure and basic chord progressions as well as discuss how to pitch a completed song to a producer/ musical director.

About the presenter
Gail Gallagher is a Chicago-based singer-songwriter, composer, and teacher. She’s worked as a music director in the Chicago musical improv scene for nearly a decade and has played for MINt, Baby Wants Candy, Spectacle Specular, Storytown Improv, Comedy Sportz, the Therapy Players, and many more. She has also written music for five original musicals including Feathers: A Super Hero musical which won “Best Underscore Throughout” at the 2017 Premiere Premiere’s festival at MCL.
Gail’s genre as a singer-songwriter is “musical theatre folk rock” and she just released her debut album Power of the Unnamed Passion which is now available on all streaming platforms. You can find out more about her work at www.gailgallaghermusic.com

He is currently the Artistic Director of Salsation Theatre Company, a 20+ year old Latino theatre company specializing in sketch and improv comedy. He currently serves as head musical director for Los Improviachis, an improvised musical mariachi band. He has trained and performed at Second City Training Center, The Annoyance Theatre, and ComedySportz Chicago and has performed with various groups across the country. He’s also a former associate producer for the Chicago Improv Festival. Nelson was also the founder of the improv program at Crown Point Community Theatre and is currently the CEO for Improductions, LLC. He’s taught workshops across the country including The Baltimore Improv Festival, The Chicago Improv Festival, The San Jose Improv Festival, The San Diego Improv Festival The Trill Comedy Festival, Melanin LatinX Comedy Festival, and The Grand Rapids Improv Festival. This class covers the fundamentals of performing musical improv online. This includes preparing your setup for online musical singing, basic singing technique, rhyming, going from scenic improv into improvised song, adapting styles, and ensemble work. This class culminates into a show at the end of the term!

About the instructor:
Nelson Velazquez has been involved in improvisational theatre for the last 15 years. He is currently the Artistic Director of Salsation Theatre Company, a 20+ year old Latino theatre company specializing in sketch and improv comedy. He currently serves as head musical director for Los Improviachis, an improvised musical mariachi band. He has trained and performed at Second City Training Center, The Annoyance Theatre, and ComedySportz Chicago and has performed with various groups across the country. He’s also a former associate producer for the Chicago Improv Festival. Nelson was also the founder of the improv program at Crown Point Community Theatre and is currently the CEO for Improductions, LLC.
